Born in 1938 in Upper Austria. He received his first violin instruction from his father. After completing high school he moved to Vienna, where he studied with Franz Samohyl at the Vienna Music Academy. In 1965 he switched to the viola and was engaged by Wolfgang Sawallisch in 1967 as solo violist in the Vienna Symphony. In 1971 he was appointed professor of viola at the Music University in Vienna. Several of his students have won prizes at international viola competitions. In 1980 he was a founding member of the Vienna String Sextet. Mr. Führlinger has toured extensively, performing throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, the U.S., Canada and China. He has led master classes in San Francisco, Cleveland, Tokyo and Amsterdam, among other places.
